In Loving Memory of
Edward Eugene Butcher

Edward Eugene Butcher, Age 95, of Edwardsville Illinois died on March 28, 2024 at 11:25 a.m. at his home. Ed was born and reared in Knoxville Tennessee on August 19, 1928 to Annabelle and William Butcher, both deceased.

Ed married Wilma Pfeiffer October 18th, 1957 at Eden Church and was married for 62 years. She passed away November 4, 2019. A son Craig Butcher survives and a sister-in-law, Norma Rickert. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his brother, Benjamin Butcher, sisters, Mildred Wolfe, Frances Kelley, Beulah Strickland and Ruth Ann Butcher in infancy; brother-in-laws, Clarence Rickert, Willard Pfeiffer, Irvin Pfeiffer, Erwin Slezinger and sister-in laws, Gertrude Pfeiffer, Betty Pfeiffer, Evelyn Slezinger. 

Ed was an accomplished commercial artist while in high school having won 3 poster contests competing against students from other high schools in Knoxville.

During the Korean War, Ed was drafted into the Army and took basic and advanced training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He joined the 1st Cavalry Division on the Capital Grounds in Seoul the day before May Day 1951. After one week in South Korea, he served the rest of his duty in North Korea. He was in 3 battles. He also served 4 months in Hokkaido, Japan and was solider of the week and was awarded a 3 day pass.

Ed worked for Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE) in General Stores before retiring in August 1993 after 26 years. He was also Fiscal Officer of Surplus Properly part time. Before coming to SIUE, he was a supervisor for a railroad contractor in East St. Louis, Illinois for 14 years.

Visitation will be on Sunday, April 7, 2024 from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. at Saska Mateer Funeral Home 210 N. Kansas Edwardsville. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m.
