He married Dolores Coleman, his wife of 61 years, on August 4, 1957 in Monticello; she survives.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Day is survived by a brother, Gerald Day of Monticello, a brother-in-law, Carl L. Coleman of Edwardsville, two special nieces, Peggy (Jeff) Wehling and Jill (Jay) Stobie, and great nieces and nephew Jenna, James and Julie Stobie, all of Glen Carbon.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Day was proceeded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Haimer and Evadene Jones, a brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Kathy Day, and a special sister-in-law, Jean Coleman.

Mr. Day received his undergraduate degree from Eastern Illinois University and a masters degree from the University of Illinois. Mr. Day was a teacher at Edwardsville High School for 33 years, the majority of which was spent as chairman of the Science Department. He retired in 1991.

For several years, Mr. Day coached the Edwardsville High School freshman basketball team and for almost two decades was the official time keeper for the varsity and junior varsity basketball games. He was a member of the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame.

Following his retirement, Mr. Day became a gentleman farmer, raising cattle and tending to his one-acre garden. He remained a devout fan of Edwardsville High School basketball, ardently following both the boys’ and girls’ teams.

Mr. Day also took great pleasure in babysitting and later serving as chauffeur for his great nieces and nephew.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 14 at Saksa Mateer Funeral Home, 210 N. Kansas in Edwardsville; services will immediately follow at the funeral home. He will be interred at Sunset Hills Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Edwardsville High School Science Department or the EHS girls’ basketball program.
