Gerald W. "Jerry" Newman

Gerald W. "Jerry" Newman, age 86, of Glen Carbon, died at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.

He was born Oct. 13, 1930, in Jonesboro, the son of the late Claude and Leila Algers Newman.

He married Rose M. Kyro Leach on June 19, 1999, at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Glen Carbon. She preceded him in death.

He is survived by his children: Jane (Bob) Eppinger of Mount Olive, Diane (husband Tim Menary) Newman of Glen Carbon and Michael Newman of Collinsville; step-children: Linda (Kenneth) Horvath of Granite City, Dennis (Kathy) Leach of Glen Carbon, Janice Quinn of St. Louis, Deanna (Steve) Hess of Hamel and Dianna (John) Vieth of Edwardsville; sisters: Norma Smith of Glen Carbon, Shirley Mosby of Granite City and Charlene Sadler of Jonesboro; grandchildren: Matthew Eppinger, Leslie Eppinger and Ryan Newman; 10 step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife: Julia Laswell Newman; one son: Jerry Newman; one sister: Nina Wright; one brother: Donald Newman and one grandson: James Newman Menary.

Mr. Newman worked at Granite City Steel for 41 years and was a foreman in galvanizing, retiring in 1988. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Saksa Mateer Funeral Home in Edwardsville.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Glen Carbon City Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to VITAS Hospice in Fairview Heights.
