John _Jack_ Cooper obituary photo

In Loving Memory of
John “Jack” Cooper

John “Jack” Cooper, 76, died Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at Barnes Jewish Hospital surrounded by much love from his wife and the LVAD nursing team whom he, in turn, loved.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Sandy Angle Cooper; his son, Jeff Cooper; Jeff’s wife, Francesca Moroney Cooper; his grandchildren, Jack, Ella, Maggie and Maria Cooper and Norman Harris; his brother Ben Cooper and his wife Joan Cooper and their children and grandchildren; and many other family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his sister Pat Cooper Schmittling and his mother and father, Ben and Ann (Knudtson) Cooper.

Born and raised in Bethalto, he was a lifelong resident of the state of Illinois, including the cities of Moline, Granite City, Grayslake, Springfield, and, most recently, Edwardsville.

After graduating from Civic Memorial High School in Bethalto in 1960, he attended Illinois College for two years. He and Sandy met while working at Alton Memorial Hospital. They were married in 1964 at Carrollton Baptist Church. Their son Jeff was born in 1969.

Mr. Cooper’s career as a banker spanned more than thirty years, including his long tenure as Vice-President of the First National Bank of Granite City. His last job before retirement was at PNC Bank in Springfield.

He was a devoted and committed member of all the communities in which he lived and worked, and he served on numerous boards. Most notably, his volunteerism included the YMCA of Granite City; the booster club of Granite City High School where he served as President during the 1980s, while his son was a student there; and the Villa Marie Pool Association in Godfrey, where he served as President during the 1970s.

An avid reader and sports fan, he enjoyed watching or listening to Cardinals baseball and Blues hockey, but the highlight of his life by far was taking his grandson, Jack, to his soccer, hockey, and baseball games and practices.

Services will be held Monday, August 20 at 11:00 AM at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 406 Hillsboro Avenue, Edwardsville, Illinois. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM, and services will follow at 12:00 PM. Interment following at Roselawn Cemetery, 10 Erwin Plegge Boulevard, Bethalto, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to memorialize Mr. Cooper is encouraged to make a donation to St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Checks are gratefully accepted via the mailing address above.
